Of all the materials in the world, few are more durable and enduring than stone. Even today, marble columns uphold the history-laden weight of Athens’ Acropolis, and far away on the English moors, the rough stones of Stonehenge keep a silent guard over the passing centuries. For sculptor Sharon Gainsburg, stone is much more than a simple artistic material; it allows one to work with nature, rather than against it, to create timeless beauty. “For me,” she says, “stone holds the truth of the earth. It imparts energy with tactile fluency and I feel its history and sense its essence. When I carve, I feel connected to the earth and a universal consciousness.”
